Investigation underway after fuel spill into Wabash River
MT. CARMEL, IL (WFIE) - An investigation into a diesel fuel spill in the Wabash River is underway.
The spill that dumped over a thousand barrels of oil occurred near Mt. Carmel is now under investigation by several groups.
A command center has been set up in Grayville where several groups have gathered trying to figure out what went wrong. Among them, Marathon pipeline, IDEM, the coasts guard and the EPA.
14 News did learn that 1,150 barrels of diesel fuel was spilled into the Wabash River. The good news, the Wabash is not above flood level, meaning no fuel will make its way on land.
With that said, the Wabash is at flood level making it tougher to collect the spill, but it will dilute it more quickly so it moves down river faster.
14 News is told the oil has reached the Ohio River now. Inlet locations along the river have been notified that a potential issue is coming their way. There are no water or air quality issues.
Officials are still working to find the source of this leak.
