GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVLY/Gray News) - A 19-year-old in North Dakota is navigating a new normal after a firework exploded in his right hand, causing him to have it amputated.

Last week, Parker Ball was shooting off fireworks with friends when a mortar tube blew up in his hand.

“His friends got him to the hospital quickly, thank God for that,” his uncle James Ball said.

While the family initially hoped he would retain some use of his hand, he ultimately suffered the entire amputation at the wrist of his right hand.

Parker will more than likely need to transition to a different career. He will also need a prosthetic hand. As of now, the family is unsure if the insurance company will cover the prosthetic device.

“He’s got really good spirits,” James said. “He’s so full of life and he’s so determined to not let this set back the rest of his life. It’s inspiring.”

Fire officials add, don’t light up inside or near a building. Be aware of powerlines, trees and weather conditions. Don’t be under the influence of alcohol.

Soak your fireworks in water before throwing them in the trash, as well.

“You always hear the horror stories and just assume someone was being reckless,” James said. “I know most people are going to be quick to judge. They’ll say, ‘Kids are kids’ or ‘People are stupid.’ In this case it just seems more like a fireworks malfunction, terrible accident, wrong place, wrong time kind of thing. For something like this to happen to someone so young is beyond words. I can’t even begin to process what that’s like.”

His first occupational therapy appointment is about two weeks out.
