Books-A-Million has closed its doors after 14 years in business in Evansville, adding to the multitude of vacant retail spaces at the Lawndale-Washington Commons.

Would-be customers discovered the closing over the weekend, when a  small, hand-written sign was posted on the front door, indicating  that Sunday was the final day of business for the discount bookseller.

Rumors that the store would be closing had been circulating since mid-December when Heritage Federal Credit Union moved out of the shopping  strip, relocating in to a new home in what was the former Old National Bank branch on Vogel Road.

Also closing recently was the  Lawndale Barber Shop, a longtime tenant. The once-bustling retail center has suffered in recent years, with  the development of the Burkhardt Road shopping area, which includes Greatland Target.

Target had been an anchor in the Lawndale shopping  center for years before it closed to move to its new location.
