Forgotten Claire's Stock: IN Windfall
New Media Producer: Kerry Corum
A Jeffersonville woman, who thought a company she'd bought stock in had gone out of business, got an unexpected $116,000 windfall.
Carol Lee Woods got a check from the attorney general's office's unclaimed property division last week.
She invested $800 in a wig-making company in the 1960s and then lost track of the company, which changed its name twice over the years.
Her $800 investment in what is now Claire's Stores Incorporated had grown to more than $116,000 in value.
The state received the stock because Woods' shares had no activity for at least five years.
Woods, who owns an auto dealership in Jeffersonville in southern Indiana, says it was better than winning the lottery.
She says she may invest her windfall in more stock and might take a cruise.
