Man wanted in connection with Carmi, IL beatings arrested

CARMI, IL (WFIE) - A man wanted in connection with a pair of beatings that left a man in critical condition after an incident in Carmi, IL has been arrested.

According to police, 18-year-old Harold Artice Ivy was arrested late Monday night in Washington County, IN.  Ivy was wanted on a couple charges of aggravated battery.

Police say a 911 call came in around 9:30 last Monday night from a man saying two drunk men had attacked him at a grocery store on 5th street. That man said the suspects, Leif Harper and Artice Ivy,  had broken out the windshield of his truck in the area of 5th St. and 5th St. Market.

Chief Jason Carter with Carmi Police Department says the first incident was not random. "He was familiar with the suspect. had a brief encounter as far as verbal back and forth before the actual altercation occurred.   "

A few minutes later, police say another 911 call came in about a bicyclist, identified as Toby Sanders, laying near the edge of the street with a large of amount of blood coming from his head. This incident, police say, is random.

Sanders was breathing, but unconscious. He was taken to Deaconess Hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

We spoke with one of Sanders friends, Mark Evans. "He's the best kind of friend you could ever ask for. If you knocked on his door at three in the morning and said Toby, my car broke down or whatever, can I spend the night.. he would say here. Here is a couch or a bed or whatever," said Evans.

Witnesses identified the same two men in both incidents.

Ivy is being extradited back to White County, IL.
