20-year-old son dies trying to save father from drowning during beach vacation, loved ones say
HOLDEN BEACH, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) - A father and son have died while reportedly vacationing on a North Carolina beach over the weekend.
Authorities said the situation started Sunday morning when first responders were called to Holden Beach for reports of two people who were struggling in the water.
Rescuers said they tried to save them but, despite efforts, they were unable to.
The Holden Beach Police Department identified the men who died at the scene as Daniel Jason Roberts, 46, and Dylan Daniel Roberts, 20.
Police did not immediately confirm the relationship between the two men, but family members said they were father and son.
“Dylan Roberts and his father were tragically lost in a swimming accident while on vacation,” a GoFundMe made in support of the family shared.
Loved ones said the 20-year-old jumped into the water to help save his father that morning.
“In his father’s moment of greatest need, Dylan acted without hesitation, courageously entering the water and ultimately giving his own life while trying to save him,” the fundraiser continued.
Holden police did not say at the scene if the deaths were related to rip currents or a drowning. Rip current risk in Holden Beach that day was reported to be at a moderate level.
Town Tavern shared Sunday night that Dylan Roberts worked at the restaurant. The team said he and his positivity are going to be greatly missed.
“Dylan was far more than a valued employee .... he was a crucial part of our family, bringing an unmistakable energy, warmth, and positive spirit to the Tavern day after day,” the restaurant’s post read.
Holden Beach officials also extended their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the men who died.
