Woman dies in freak accident after getting hit by her own car

INDIAN LAND, S.C. (WBTV/Gray News) — A woman died in a freak accident after she was run over by her own vehicle.

It happened Wednesday evening in the parking lot of the Madison Ridge Apartments in Indian Land, South Carolina.

The Lancaster County coroner said the woman, identified as 63-year-old Margaret McWeeney, was believed to have gotten out of her car while it was still in reverse, unbeknownst to her.

When the car started to roll backward, the coroner said McWeeney tried to get back into the car but accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes. The car then accelerated backward and hit McWeeney and nearby vehicles.

The coroner’s office said it is investigating the crash along with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Further information was not immediately available.
