Nationwide basketball program teaches kids about healthy behaviors
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Some Evansville students got a lesson in basketball and nutrition today.
Caritas hosted its signature “Healthy Hoops” program at Glenwood Leadership Academy in Evansville.
The national initiative uses basketball to teach kids about healthy behaviors. The event also focuses on adult wellness.
A mobile unit was parked out front providing free cancer risk assessments.
Officials say cancer death rates are 20% higher here than the national average. To encourage participation, the first 150 people who completed the assessment received a free gas card.
Since launching in 2002, the nationwide basketball program has impacted more than 62,000 lives.
Organizers say up to 80 kids participated in today’s session in Evansville.
