SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) - A South Carolina father is calling for justice after he says he was left for dead in a hit-and-run that led to the loss of his leg.

Trevor Bibeau has spent the last month pushing through the loss of his left leg, a loss he never imagined. The father of two says he was headed home from work on his electric scooter around 9:30 p.m. Aug. 13. It’s a route he says he’d taken hundreds of times.

But that night, Bibeau says a truck was coming at him, so he tried to get out of the way. Instead, he says driver of the truck hit him, ran over his leg and took off.

“I’m screaming, ‘Help me! You just ran me over. I need to get out of the road. Call 911!’” Bibeau said.

Alone in the dark and in indescribable pain, Bibeau says it was the thought of his two sons that gave him the strength to pull himself out of the road and call 911.

“The only thing I could think about was ‘I need to get to my phone because I have my kids. I need to be there for my kids,’” he said.

Bibeau spent days in the hospital, underwent five blood transfusions and has since had to have his leg amputated.

“It’s been kind of emotional. It’s like losing something really close to me,” he said. “I’ve had my leg for 33 years, and now, I’m down to one leg. I’m stuck in a wheelchair. I never thought that would happen.”

Bibeau says he’s looking for justice and has a clear message to the person that ran him over: “Why did you take off? How can you, as a human being, hit somebody and just leave them for dead like that?”

Despite his injuries, Bibeau vows he’s not “going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.” A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family as he recovers.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed troopers are still looking for the suspect in this case. Anyone with information is asked to call the highway patrol at (864) 241-1000.
