Woman accused of locking child outside in the cold

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - A woman is facing a child neglect charge after police say she locked a child outside in the cold.

31-year-old Rontasia Ballet was booked into jail Thursday, but police say the neglect happened in the end of December.

They say the girl had no coat or socks and was outside for at least 30 minutes. The temperature was 38 degrees but felt like 30 degrees with the wind chill.

Officers say she knocked on a neighbor’s door for help.

They say the child was in Ballet’s care, but they had a fight before she locked her out.

Officers say they knocked on Ballet’s door, but she refused to speak with them or let the child back in.

Records show Ballet was released Friday on a $220 bond. She was in court Friday afternoon.
