EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - In conjunction with the Licensed to Pill special, 14 News is teaming up with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, Prosecutor's Office, and Evansville Police Department to hold a prescription pill disposal event.

In 2013, the sheriff's office installed an "Unused, Expired and Unwanted Medication Drop Box" in the main lobby of the Sheriff's Command Post. The drop box is located at 3500 N. Harlan Ave.

According to the sheriff's office, this and other drug take-back programs are the only ways to safely dispose of unused prescriptions or any drugs you may have. Flushing medications can potentially damage our water supplies and the environment.

We're told it is also a safety issue. If you keep extra prescription drugs in your home, it's an invitation for thieves to break in and steal them, which means those drugs then make it into the hands of drug dealers and addicts.
