Peace of Mind: Easing back-to-school anxiety

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - The first day of school is exciting, but can also be scary for some children.  In a special Peace of Mind project, an expert with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation offered this advice for parents.

  • Plan Ahead
  • Get back to a routine
  • Have brief goodbyes at drop-off to let your child know you're entrusting them to the teachers who will support them
  • Teach kids deep breathing techniques and self-regulation skills
  • Have an open dialogue with your child's teacher

"If the anxiety continues for a few weeks, then definitely reach out to that support staff, speak with counselors and social workers that are there to help," said Stephanie Crandell, EVSC Director of Student Support Services.
