HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) - We are coming closer to an official sale of Henderson's historic Ellis Park.
Current owner Ron Geary and Saratoga company officials were at track Friday for a meeting.
Racing continued there on Friday as usual.
We're learning there are no changes are anticipated in the immediate future. But a team of Saratoga employees are in town evaluating the property and coming up with a game plan.
The deal could close as soon as early next week.
"We've been involved with the property now for almost six years and it was just natural when Ron decided to step aside that we would step in, " Alex Tucker
Treasurer of the Saratoga Casino and Hospitality Group explained.
Ron Geary has owned the track for the last 12 years. Saratoga stepped in six years ago and picked up 30 percent of the ownership.
"We look forward to making it even better here as time goes on " Dan Gerrity, Saratoga Harness Racing, Inc. said.
"At the time when Mr. Geary came in, people were a little nervous and we've had an extremely great outcome. The track is in great shape, the facilities are a little bit older but that's a lot of the nostalgia of the people coming out and seeing the track, "Suzanne Miles, State Representative of the 7th district recalled.
Geary added as with any business, there have been set backs. And he has mixed emotions as he prepares to cross the finish line.
"Saving this 95-year-old facility, we did that. That was our original goal ," Ron Geary, Ellis Park's owner, said.
But, he added, it's time to focus on his family.
"I will help any way I can. I don't want to make too much of big time commitment because that was one reason I wanted to slow down," Geary added.
Geary tells me he wants to spend a little more time down south at his home in Florida. Saratoga officials say no jobs are in jeopardy.
