EPD releases body cam video of Friday shooting

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Evansville Police gave an update on the officer involved shooting Friday night on N. Kentucky Ave near the Diamond Ave intersection.

They released body camera video and 911 calls from the incident.

The coroner says the suspect, 51-year-old Barry Freeman, died Sunday night from two gunshot wounds to the chest.

Police say Freeman opened fire late Friday in a neighborhood in the 2400 block of Kentucky Ave, killing neighbor 56-year-old Jeffrey Kempf. Police said it appears Kempf was randomly targeted by Freeman, in which he thought Kempf was an officer.

Evansville police say Freeman started shooting dozens of rounds using a rifle before 9:30p.m. on Friday.

He hit four homes, several police vehicles, and Kempf, a neighbor, before being shot at by EPD SWAT Officer and Detective, Kyle Thiry.

"That is a testament to the skill and the calmness that officer Thiry displayed that night in bringing peace back to that neighborhood," EPD Sgt. Jason Cullum said miraculously, no officers were hurt during the exchange.

During Tuesday's news conference, we asked Sgt. Cullum if police knew anything about Freeman's motive. He told us their investigation indicated Freeman might have had an argument between a family member earlier Friday, and that he could have been drinking.

But, as to why he would target officers, EPD doesn't know. Sgt. Cullum said Freeman had no criminal history with police.

Freeman actually had prior military training, authorities said, which described why his motions during the incident seemed so advanced.
