Coroner releases autopsy results for shooting suspect

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - The autopsy results for the suspect in a deadly shooting in Evansville have been released.

Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear says the suspect, 51-year-old Barry Freeman, died Sunday night at Deaconess Hospital. Lockyear says autopsy results show Freeman died from two gunshot wounds to the chest.

According to Evansville police, Freeman opened fire late Friday in a neighborhood in the 2400 block of Kentucky Ave, killing 56-year-old Jeffrey Kempf. Police said it appears Kempf was randomly targeted by Freeman.

Evansville police say Freeman started shooting dozens of rounds using a rifle around 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

He struck four homes, several police vehicles, and Kempf before being shot at by a SWAT official. No officers were injured, EPD Sgt. Jason Cullum stated.

"There was an individual that was in her front yard that she believed had been shot," Sgt. Cullum said. "She tried multiple times to yell at the individual to see if he would respond, but he did not move."

Since Freeman was roaming the streets and difficult to contain, police say this was a difficult situation for the officers to train for.

"They are not only are trying to protect themselves, but they're trying to protect the people that live in that neighborhood," Cullum continued.

And for this neighborhood, they never expected something like this.
