MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE) - Michael McCool is out of intensive care and heading to rehab in Chicago.
He's been in ICU at St. Mary's since he was shot late last month.
Authorities say Cornelius Walker shot McCool in the head when McCool came to collect a delinquent payment for Aaron's Rent-A-Center.
14 News has been in touch with McCool's family since the shooting. Family members tell us his improvements have amazed doctors.
"It's definitely a miracle," said Rebecca Mason, one of McCool's best friends. "For the first days we didn't even know if he was going to make it-that was just the focus of everything-to keep him surviving. It took over a week for the neurosurgeon to start to give us any hope that he was going to survive. The doctors and nurses are all amazed at how he's doing."
Mason tells us McCool, his wife, and five children are heading to Chicago for specialized brain trauma rehab. Mason says he still has a long road to recovery but is doing well and surprising the doctors every day.
McCool can now move the left side of his body. Aside from his job at Aaron's Rent A Center, McCool is also a beloved pastor and he's received an out pour of support and prayers for his recovery.
We're told McCool will be in rehab for 30 days. His wife is taking off work to move with him to Chicago full-time.
The move and medical bills have created a large financial burden on the McCool family. They're asking for your help through GoFundMe. You can donate here.
