EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - A woman was taken to the hospital after an accidental shooting.

It happened Thursday night around 9:40 in the parking lot of the east side Target store.

Police say Stacey Craven and her 15-year-old son were sitting in their vehicle when the teen removed a gun from under a seat.

According to police, the teen pulled the trigger thinking the gun had an external safety that would prevent the gun from firing. However, the gun had a trigger assembly safety and went off when he pulled the trigger.

EPD says Craven was shot in the back.

She was taken to St Mary's Medical Center for treatment. Police say her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Another one of the Craven's sons tell us doctors are happy with the progress his mother has made so far, but she will have surgery again Saturday morning.

According to her son's Facebook page, the woman underwent surgery last night and today she is able to respond to questions.

Since police say the incident appears to be an accident, no charges have been filed.
