EPD: children take care of marijuana plant growing in home

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Evansville Police found marijuana growing in the basement of an east side home Wednesday.

The four children who lived in the home on South Taft Avenue told child services they took care of and even watered the marijuana plant.

According to police, the children's mother, Melissa Mitz, and her boyfriend, Joel Armenta, were arrested.

Along with the plant, officers found dog feces in the basement and drug paraphernalia around the house.

Mitz told police she was trying to make CBD oil for a sick family member.

Police say it was impossible for the kids, all under 10, to know what they were doing.

"All four of them stated they helped take care of the plants. Obviously they have no idea what it is.  I know they're discussions right now whether it should be legal or illegal, but at this point it is illegal," said Sergeant Jason Cullum.

Those children have been placed with child protective services and Mitz and Armenta are currently in the Vanderburgh County Jail.
