EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - The Evansville Fire Department welcomes four new recruits.

Adam Smith, Jeffrey Watkins, Stephen Smith, and Blake Hochstetler were sworn in after over 400 hours of fire and hazmat training.

For Blake Hochstetler, the day was even more special.

Blake is the fourth generation firefighter in his family, with a member serving since 1927.

Fire Chief Mike Connelly invited his father to put his badge on him in the ceremony.

Hochstetler tells us it was family that originally drew him to this career.

"It was the family connections at first, but the serving and giving back to the community that you were born and raised in means a lot, and it means a lot to be able to serve the community and be able to be more of a part of everybody," he told us.

The four new probationary firefighters are now going to start their 240 hours of EMT training.
