No charges to be filed against Grayville officer involved in shooting

GRAYVILLE, IL (WFIE) - A Grayville, IL police officer who shot a suspect will not face any criminal charges.

The White County Sheriff's Office says the special prosecutor investigating the case determined that no charges should be filed against Officer Jess Burley for shooting 48-year-old John Eagleson.

while Officer Burley was working a traffic violation call.

The sheriff's office says Eagleson was attempting to flee when officer Burley stepped in front of his car. That's when Burley fired one shot through the front windshield because he was afraid Eagleson was going to try to run him over.

Eagleson was taken to Deaconess Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound in the face.

The sheriff's office tells us once he was released from the hospital, Eagleson was charged with aggravated assault on an officer.
