Former UK center Mike Phillips dies

MADISONVILLE, KY (WFIE) - Hopkins County Coroner Dennis Mayfield has confirmed the death of former University of Kentucky center Mike Phillips.  He was 59.Mayfield tells 14NEWS that Phillips passed away on Saturday at his home in Madisonville. He said they were still investigating the circumstances of the death, but Mayfield confirmed Phillips died after a fall.

Phillips was a member of the 1978 NCAA Championship team. The 6'10'' center averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game during his UK career.

He was named Mr. Basketball in Ohio in 1973 and 1974. After leaving UK, Phillips played 11 seasons in Spain.

His former coach Joe B. Hall was saddened by the news of Phillips death. The player he called one of the original Twin Towers.

"It's one of those horrible moments that you refresh memories and thank goodness they are all good and Mike was the kind of player and character that you were proud of," says Hall.
