The daughter of an Evansville woman who was murdered more than a year ago is desperate for help because she wants to give her mom a proper resting place.
Angie Dixon was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in June 2013. It happened in her apartment at the Arbors on South Lombard.
Three people are now in jail for Dixon's death, but her daughter, 17-year-old Jayla Dixon, says her focus now isn't justice.
Since Angie's death, Jayla said she's been struggling knowing her mom is no longer physically with her.
"She's not going to be there on my 18th birthday," she said. "She's not going to be there at graduation. She's not going to be at my wedding, and I have to live with that every single day... knowing she's not going to be there for any of that."
Wind, rain, or shine, on most holidays, you'll find Jayla at the cemetery where her mother is buried.
"We come out here every birthday of hers and every Mother's Day," she said.
However, where Angie's buried, there's no headstone or marker. Instead, there's only flowers and a cross.
"It makes me feel like crap," Jayla said. "We put flowers on the wrong gravestone and had to move them because we couldn't even find where her grave was."
For more than a year, the 17-year-old worked and saved to buy some kind of stone, but she's not there yet.
"At least it would help me knowing that when I come out here I can find her gravestone," Jayla said.
To ease the pain, a friend created an online fundraiser, and some classmates gave her donations.
"To see people putting those dollar bills in there and seeing them add up and two people even put $20 bills in there," said Jayla. "It means a lot."
Jayla says she won't stop until she has the money, so she can give her mother what she deserves.
