Move to save historic building in downtown Evansville

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Sources tell 14News that the City of Evansville is in negotiations with the owners of a vacant historic building downtown.

14News has learned that the city is prepared to pay $100,000 to 'mothball' the Owen Block, which means the roof would be fixed and windows boarded up.

These steps would make the building more secure while it is in a transition phase.

Sources say the city wants the owners to sign the building over to the Indiana Landmarks Association so they can rehab it.

Officials say the building has been empty for several years and the owners have accrued more than $50,000 in fines.
