Hopes are high in Huntingburg as the city goes for the Stellar Communities designation this year.

The City of Huntingburg is currently looking to install a new railroad overpass, new crosstown trailways and new housing downtown. With their recent application for the designation, they're hoping to fast-track these projects.

The Stellar Communities program is organized by INDOT, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, and the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

Communities submit a letter of interest, followed by a strategic investment plan for proposed projects to the state and finalists for the program are announced in March.

Mayor Dennis Spinner says the program leverages state and federal funding for large scale projects.

"Whether we receive the designation or not, what this process has allowed us to do is to really prioritize our projects for the future. We just hope that with the designation that would come along with the Stellar Communities, it would give us a chance to fast-track some of these," Spinner says.

Mayor Spinner says the state will make their decision as to whether or not Huntingburg will get the designation later this year.
