Cause determined for explosion, massive fire in Gibson Co.

GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) - Fire officials say they have determined what a caused an oil tank explosion and subsequent massive in Gibson County Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews rushed to put out a massive fire after three oil well tanks exploded on 975 S near the Buckskin area.

Officials said oil leaked into a nearby creek, but was contained shortly after the flames were out. Other wells in the area were also shut off, and officials said power lines were down near the scene.

Officials said they suspected there was an electrical shortage in a shed next to the tanks, but the cause is still under investigation.

We're told the call came in as a explosion with the possibility of people trapped inside a camper trailer, but authorities say no one was injured in the explosion.

Fire officials tell 14 News they believe the cause was electrical. They tell us a spark from one of the tank batteries ignited the explosion.

Many viewers told 14 News that a large cloud of black smoke could be seen from miles away.
