Firefighters in Daviess County, KY responded to fires in two vacant church buildings on Sunday morning.

The first fire was at Mt. Zion Church on Windy Hallow Road, just off Hwy 81. Officials say it started sometime before 10:00 a.m.

The Daviess County Fire Investigator Harvey Henderson says the church collapsed and made it hard for firefighters to control all of the hotspots.

The second fire was at a vacant church on Macedonia Road, just off Hwy 815.

The chief from the St. Joseph Fire Department says the fire was coming through the roof when crews arrived. The chief says it was knocked down within 30 minutes allowing firefighters to get closer to it.

Officials tell 14 News that they believe both fires are suspicious. They say the churches are within five miles of each other.

"The houses have been without power for a long period of time and stuff. I know we have had some weather today and stuff and we are looking into it. It's a possibility it could be an accidental fire, but we are leaning more towards it could be an arson," Henderson said.

Henderson says both fires are still under investigation.
