The US Postal Service of the Office of the Inspector General tells 14 News they have identified a subject that may be stealing items from the mail.

Officials say the subject is an employee at the processing facility in Evansville.

Evansville residents began noticing missing gift cards from the envelopes they were sending and receiving in January.

In one instance, a woman says she mailed her daughter a Wal-mart gift card.

When the card arrived, it was taped shut and the gift card was gone.

When she went to Wal-mart to report the stolen card, she learned that same card was used at the west side Wal-mart.

When we first reported the story, several families came forward with similar evidence that their mail was taped shut when it arrived.

The USPS Office of the Inspector General said the employee has since been suspended, but has not been charged.

Officials say the case was turned over to the Office of the Attorney General. Attorney Joseph Hogsett's office cannot confirm nor deny an investigation.
