One killed in shooting after traffic accident in Evansville
One man is dead following a traffic accident and shooting that happened in Evansville Tuesday afternoon.
Evansville police were called to the crash at the corner of New York and Sweetser around 4:45 p.m.
Shortly after, they got word the person inside the SUV had been shot and later died. Witnesses tell police the shots were fired after the crash and at least two people then ran from the scene.
Those two men were detained and interviewed, but police say they're trying to figure out why the SUV crashed into the tree in the first place.
Neighbors tell 14 News they felt the crash and went outside, surprised at what had landed in their neighbor's front yard.
"We felt the house shook. We didn't know what was going on. We just looked out the window and then we seen the car down there and the cops showed up and everything," neighbor Amy Baughn said.
"I walked outside to see what's going on and people were standing out and I saw the van. It's pretty bad how this happens. The world today is getting pretty bad," said Bryan Mosely, who lives next door to where the SUV crashed.
Coroner Annie Groves says the autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday to determine a cause of death. The name of the victim is not being released.
Police say they found a gun near the scene, but don't know if it was used in this shooting.
The last word reported is that the two men were being interviewed, but no word from detectives on if they've been released or will be taken into custody.
