Four local companies on "Best Places to Work in Indiana" list

A record 100 companies have been designated a 2013 "Best Places to Work in Indiana," the Indiana Chamber of Commerce announced on Tuesday.

That number was such a significant increase from last year – up from 70 – that the honorees have been slotted into four categories instead of the traditional two. The new category classification will remain for future years.

Top Evansville Companies are United Leasing, Inc in the 15-74 employee category, Matrix Integration, LLC in Jasper, in the 75-249 employee grouping, Evansville's Traylor Brothers, Inc. in the 250-999 category, and WOW! Internet, Cable and Phone in the group with 1,000 or more employees.

This is the eighth installment of the Best Places to Work in Indiana program, which is presented by Comcast Business Class. Actual rankings for the companies will be unveiled at a May 2 awards dinner at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis.

The top companies in the state are determined through employer reports and comprehensive employee surveys. The Best Companies Group, which handled the selection process, oversees similar programs in 21 other states.

Winners were selected from four categories: small companies of between 15 and 74 U.S. employees; medium companies of between 75 and 249 U.S. employees; large companies of between 250 and 999 U.S. employees; and major companies with 1,000 or more U.S. employees. Out-of-state parent companies were eligible to participate if at least 15 full-time employees are in Indiana.

"We had an unprecedented number of applicants and worthy companies this year. The jump in honorees was so significant that it made sense to realign the categories now to better include an increasing number of companies going forward," explains Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar.

"We believe the new categories better represent the distinct employer groups in the state. The goal is to continue to grow the program and have more and more deserving Hoosier companies recognized for providing a productive, employee-friendly and successful work environment."

Of the 2013 honorees, 60 were repeats from last year. Two companies – Edward Jones (statewide) and Katz, Sapper & Miller (Indianapolis) – have made the Best Places to Work list all eight years of the program's existence.

In addition to the May 2 awards dinner, winners will be recognized via a special section of the Indiana Chamber's bimonthly BizVoice® magazine and through Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick – both of which reach statewide audiences. Additional program partners are the Best Companies Group, Indiana Economic Development Corporation and Indiana State Council of SHRM. All companies that participated in the 2013 Best Places to Work program receive an in-depth evaluation identifying strengths and weaknesses according to their employees. In turn, this report can be used in developing or enhancing employee retention and recruitment programs.
