Sex Offenders Live Near Schools

A study in Munster, Indiana, finds sex offenders live near schools, legally.

Seventy-six registered sex offenders live within three blocks of schools in and around Gary, Indiana, and most do so legally.

That's according to a study by the Times of Munster newspaper.

It found that 22 live less than five-hundred feet from schools, and three live directly across the street from school yards or parks.

Indiana doesn't restrict where many convicted sex offenders can live once they complete their probation.

Indiana law bars sex offenders from living within one-thousand feet of schools or day-care centers while they are on probation or parole unless a judge grants them special exemptions.

The Indiana Supreme Court last year upheld the constitutionality of the state's sex-offender registry.
