Hopkins Co. Sheriff's Dept. to receive grant

HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) - The Hopkins County Sheriff's Department is getting about $75,000 to upgrade their radio towers, get handheld radios for their deputies, and update their digital radio system.
The money comes from the Kentucky Department of Homeland Security.
Officials say the current system needs an upgrade because some parts of the county don't get a clear signal and during emergencies, that's a big safety issue.
"If we can't communicate with each other for example, we could be in a fight with a suspect or chasing somebody or just needing to communicate back to dispatch. There are areas in the county that we can't do that right now," says Hopkins County Sheriff's Department Detective Matt Sanderson.
The Sheriff's Department also received a grant worth over $20,000 from the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety for new equipment.
