Beshear: Weekend COVID cases highest in last four weeks

KENTUCKY (WFIE) - Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear held another coronavirus update Monday afternoon.

During his Monday update, Beshear said cases appear to be moving up at the moment.

He said the number of cases reported on Saturday and Sunday was the highest increase the state has seen in the last four weeks.

On Saturday, the governor reported 2,048 new cases and 42 new deaths, including a 43-year-old woman from Ohio County. On Sunday, he said there were 1,018 newly reported cases and 15 new deaths, including a 43-year-old from Daviess County.

Monday’s case reports included 822 new cases and 44 deaths due to the virus.

He said the state’s positivity rate is at 6.56%.

As cases seem to be moving up, Beshear says COVID hospitalizations are also ticking up.

However, Beshear mentioned that ICU patients and ventilator usage appear to be stable for the time being.

Kentucky hospitals that are experiencing critical staffing shortages have dropped to 29.

Beshear is asking Kentuckians to be careful during the upcoming holidays as cases and hospitalizations have risen.

Beshear ended his update with some news about vaccinations.

The state says they have definitely seen an uptick in the vaccinations in the five to 11-year old range.

He said they saw an increase in vaccinations over the weekend, saying they had 19,555 Kentuckians get their first shot.

  • Daviess Co. - 17,503 cases, 275 deaths, 54.29% vaccinated
  • Muhlenberg Co. - 5,731 cases, 93 deaths
  • Hopkins Co. - 8,462 cases, 205 deaths
  • Ohio Co. - 4,614 cases, 85 deaths, 40.85% vaccinated
  • Henderson Co. - 8,038 cases, 112 deaths, 51.46% vaccinated
  • Webster Co. - 2,515 cases, 39 deaths, 47.50% vaccinated
  • McLean Co. - 1,519 cases, 42 deaths, 50.08% vaccinated
  • Union Co. - 2,486 cases, 37 deaths, 41.94% vaccinated
