EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Officials with Mesker Park Zoo have announced the opening date for the penguin exhibit.

According to the zoo’s Facebook page, the Kinney Family Penguins of Patagonia is set to open to the public on October 27.

Zoo management says it’s taken a lot of time and manpower to bring them here.

Now that they’ve arrived they say it should give a big boost to zoo attendance.

Executive Director, Erik Beck says for at least the next week and a half, they need to get the penguins comfortable.

“We’re still getting the penguins used to their new area. Learning how to eat in their new space, trusting the zookeepers, because we hand feed them. So, they have to take the food from the person. It’s always a new adjustment, just like moving into a new city or into a new home, everything’s a little bit new and we want to make sure they’re safe and comfortable,” says Beck.

Also at the zoo, ‘Boo At The Zoo’ has been canceled for Friday night due to weather.

They say if you already have tickets, they’ll still be valid for any other night of the event.
