EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Crews were called to a house fire Friday morning in the 1000 block of West Virginia Street.

Officials with the Evansville Fire Department say they were called to that fire around 7:10 a.m.

They say crews arrived and found a fire in the basement.

They quickly put it out in about five minutes.

Neighbors in the area told authorities that this was a vacant home and has had homeless activity.

Officials interviewed a homeless occupant who told them he was using a stick with a cloth as a torch to see in the basement and accidentally started the fire.
