Authorities: 2 taken to hospital following crash on Highway 57 near Baseline
VANDERBURGH CO., Ind. (WFIE) - Emergency crews were called to the scene of a crash on Highway 57 near Baseline.
The wreck happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Dispatchers say it was called in as an injury crash, and extrication was called.
Officials tell our crew that a vehicle was stalled near Baseline. They say traffic was slowing down, and a car didn’t see the semi in front of them was stopped.
That’s when authorities say the car ran into the semi, and both individuals in the car were taken to the hospital.
We are told the driver, 18-year-old Aidan Mercer of Evansville, was found unconscious with severe, life-threatening injuries, and first responders applied a tourniquet to a 15-year-old passenger, who had a serious leg injury.
On Wednesday night, Mercer’s mother tells 14 News he’s currently at a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
We are told the 15-year-old passenger, who’s been identified as Mercer’s brother, was taken to the hospital, but has since returned home.
Officials say the semi had minimal damage to the rear of the trailer and the driver, 26-year-old Tyler Mills of Louisville, was not injured.
At this time, authorities say alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the collision. However, the crash will remain under investigation pending toxicology results.
The road was temporarily closed for cleanup.
