Police: 19-year-old shot on Evansville’s southside, 1 person arrested

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Police say a 19-year-old was shot on Evansville’s southside Monday night.

That happened around 9:30 p.m.

Officers with the Evansville Police Department tell us they got several calls for shots fired on South Linwood Avenue.

Later, officers say a 19-year-old man called police, saying he had been shot.

He was taken to the hospital where he’s expected to be OK.

Meanwhile, officers say they were still on scene at the original shots fired call in the 1100 block of Linwood when they received another report of a person with a gun a few houses to the west on Adams Avenue.

According to authorities, a resident in the area saw a man, later identified as 24-year-old Dawnqua Shemwell, jumping a security fence behind his home with a gun in his hand.

Police say an EPD K9 team found Shemwell hiding between two security fences. They say they found the handgun near Shemwell as well.

It was later determined that the handgun was stolen, according to officials.

Shemwell is currently being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail. He’s facing a list of charges, including battery with a deadly weapon, possession of stolen property and several counts of criminal recklessness
