Coroner: Man dies following snowboarding accident in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - An Evansville man has died from injuries he suffered in a snowboarding accident earlier this week.

According to Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear, 32-year-old Eric Daniel Gourieux was injured in the accident on Monday. This all happened near the 800 Block of Criterion Way on the city’s north side.

911 records from the night of the accident show the caller said Gourieux was snowboarding behind a Jeep when he slipped, fell and hit his head.

Officials with the Evansville Police Department say life-saving measures were performed until Gourieux was transported to Deaconess Midtown Hospital.

Gourieux passed away at Midtown Thursday afternoon after suffering multiple blunt force trauma, according to Lockyear.

The accident remains under investigation by the Evansville Police Department. The investigation launched Thursday shortly after Gourieux’s death.

Officials with EPD say since the initial emergency call was a medical run, the police department was not immediately involved.

“Normally, in these situations,” says Sergeant Nick Winsett with EPD, “we get called initially. If we were called when this happened initially, we would be so much further in this investigation. We’d know a lot more, but it’s like we are playing catch up, you know, and it’s hard this late in the game to get caught up.”

Sgt. Winsett says it is not being investigated as criminal, but rather accidental.
