Deputies: Man in ‘critical but stable condition’ after Madisonville shooting

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WFIE) - Authorities have arrested a suspect involved in a shooting in Madisonville that sent one man to the hospital.

Hopkins County Sheriff Matt Sanderson confirms to 14 News that deputies responded to a shooting on Liberty Church Road on Saturday around 11 a.m.

Sheriff Sanderson identified the shooting victim as William Keith Matheny of Madisonville. He says Matheny was shot in the upper chest near his neck. The sheriff says the victim was taken to Baptist Health Hospital in Madisonville before getting transferred to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

As of now, Matheny’s condition remains unknown, but officials say the shooting was not fatal.

Authorities arrested 48-year-old Tara Skaggs in connection to the shooting.

On Monday, authorities tell us Skaggs and Matheny dated. Deputies now say there was an argument that led to the shooting.

Sheriff Sanderson says Skaggs fled the scene before deputies arrived, but they were able to track her down.

”Around 5 p.m. that evening, she had walked probably two miles through the woods and through several fields and had ended up on Brown Road just outside of the Madisonville city limits,” explained Major Charles Young. “There was a resident here that called and advised that she had stopped there and asked to call her a taxi cab. Officers arrived on scene and advised that this was Tara Skaggs, the suspect in the shooting.”

Deputies tell us as of Monday, Matheny is listed in critical but stable condition.

Skaggs is charged with 1st-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
