Sunday marked the 21st anniversary of the Owensboro tornado

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) - Sunday marked the 21st anniversary of the Owensboro tornado of 2000.

The tornado touched down around the community of Rome then tracked over the southern part of the airport and then on into town.

Along the way, it severely damaged a church. Then Apollo High School.

It also damaged Tamarack Elementary School before hitting Kentucky Wesleyan.

Then several nearby apartments on the other side of Scherm Road.

Farther up Frederica, it pulled the wall off the Winn Dixie and onto cars in the parking lot.

The tornado then weakened and eventually lifted as it moved north.

The Owensboro tornado was an F3. It destroyed about 100 homes and severely damaged another 700.

Roughly 2,000 homes received at least minor damage.

18 people were hurt, but miraculously no one was killed.

The most severely injured person received broken vertebrae, along with multiple cuts.
