Evansville YMCA gets New Year’s rush after remodel

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The newly remodeled pool at the Ascension St. Vincent YMCA opened on Friday.

Marketing Director Lisa Verkamp said that although the pandemic led to a smaller turnout than most years, New Year’s Day proved to be one of their busiest days in a while.

The renovations included over 350 square feet of extra locker room space, the addition of dry changing rooms and a new coat of paint on the bottom of the swimming pool.

Verkamp said they wanted the YMCA to be as welcoming as possible as people began 2021.

“We’re as hopeful and as encouraged by the new year as anyone is,” she said. “So we’re here for whatever goals people set for themselves and however we can help them.”

Greg Ambrose, a regular at the gym, said that he hopes people can use the space as a way to fulfill resolutions that will help them come out of 2020.

“I hope they find their ‘why’ and stick to it,” he said.

The YMCA is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
