EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Evansville Fire Department responded to a working fire Sunday morning.
Dispatch says the call came in at 2:20 a.m., and crews responded to the 2100 block of E Franklin St.
EFD states when crews first arrived, they found the fire in a bottom floor apartment of a three-story, 12-unit apartment building. They say there is fire damage in the living room along with smoke damage to the kitchen and bedroom.
We are told the occupant is displaced, and other units were not affected.
According to fire officials, the occupant’s brother says that he was on supplemental oxygen due to a medical condition and was about to take some medication when he used a lighter to see the label and accidentally caught his beard on fire.
Due to the oxygen-enriched environment, EFD says the fire quickly spread to his clothing, blanket, and recliner. That’s when fire officials say he alerted other occupants before leaving the building.
We are told the man was treated by EFD personnel for smoke inhalation at the scene before he was transferred to AMR. AMR then transported him to St. Vincent’s where he was treated for second-degree burns to his hands and face.
Fire officials tell 14 News he will be taken to the Louisville Burn Center for further treatment.
According to dispatch, crews left the scene at 2:36 a.m.
EFD says the fire is currently classified as accidental but will remain under investigation until the exact cause is determined.
