Evansville police remind holiday shoppers to protect their valuables this season

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Evansville police are urging holiday shoppers to take steps to ensure their valuables don’t get stolen.

Sgt. Nick Winsett says if you’re out shopping, and have to keep items in your car, to put them in your trunk or cover those items up.

So far, Sgt. Winsett says they’ve not seen an uptick in thefts, but EPD anticipates that thieves will be out looking for a quick swipe.

”If you have to leave something in your car, we’re asking you to put it in your trunk or someplace that’s not visible. Because that’s what people will do, they’ll look in and if they find something, it’s just a smash and grab,” Sgt. Winsett said. “They’ll smash a window and then take off with it. So keeping it out of sight is the main thing, and keeping your doors locked.”

EPD says before you get ready for bed, check to make sure you didn’t leave anything of value in your car and make sure that it is locked up.
