OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) - Polls are closed in Daviess County and eyes are on Owensboro’s mayoral race.

Election officials say that Owensboro Mayor Tom Watson has unofficially won re-election, but 800 more ballots still need to be counted. They say he’s ahead by more than 800 votes.

This is Watson’s third term in office.

14 News spoke to Mayor Watson and got his reaction.

“It’s quite the honor for the community to let you be their mayor three times," Mayor Watson said. "And it’s a lot of responsibility, and I’m looking forward to it. We’ve got a few things going that I really wanted to keep going that I was worried would not be able to keep going without the right kind of push. So it’s four more years.”

Watson says he wants to continue focusing on economic growth in Owensboro and putting a stop to the growing meth problem.

The unofficial winners for the city commissioner’s race include Bob Glenn, Larry Maglinger, Mark Castlen and Jeff Sanford.

These races will officially be called Friday at noon.
