Coroner: Second driver in Hwy 41 crash has died, victims’ names released

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - A second person has died after a head-on collision on Highway 41 Monday night.

That happened just before 6 p.m. in front of North Junior High School.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office tells us two cars were involved.

The coroner says 79-year-old Karl Bechtel of Newburgh died on at the scene of the collision.

56-year-old Judy Pharris of Vincennes went to the hospital with serious injuries but died Tuesday morning.

US Hwy 41 between Inglefield Rd and Baseline Rd was closed for over three hours.

Authorities say it was a two-vehicle crash that resulted in two fatalities. We are told both drivers had to be extricated.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says a preliminary investigation shows that the Chevrolet Equinox was traveling south on US Hwy 41 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed the grass median and began driving in the wrong direction.

Shortly after crossing the median, deputies say the Chevrolet Equinox entered the north-bound lane of US 41 and collided with a truck.

The crash will remain under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office pending a toxicology analysis and crash reconstruction. Drugs or alcohol are not currently suspected of having been a factor in the crash.

The coroner says an autopsy is scheduled for Karl Bechtel on Wednesday.
