EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - A ceremony was held at Evansville Regional Airport Tuesday morning.
Leaders at the event included Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Vanderburgh County Commissioner Ben Shoulders.
They commemorated the finished solar covered parking canopy.
Officials tell us the main reason for the new addition is to give travelers a sheltered place to load and unload their luggage, while they reduce their carbon footprint.
Evansville Airport now has the second-largest solar-powered installation at an airport in the country. The panels will provide 50 percent of the power for the terminal.
“To be apart of things that make a difference,” said Kurt Scheider. “Maybe change people’s ideas of what solar power means to the community, not only in jobs but also with reducing their ongoing utility costs and giving them freedom of choice.”
Officials also tell us the solar panels started producing power for the Airport on August 6.
