Authorities: Inmate captured after briefly escaping Vanderburgh Co. Jail

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Vanderburgh County Dispatch tells 14 News that an inmate has escaped from jail.

Dispatch officials say the call came in just before 8:55 a.m.

According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate gained access to an unauthorized area of the jail. They say the inmate waited for an employee to enter the building from an external door.

The news release states the inmate then ran past the employee and attempted to hide on jail property but was found and taken into custody.

Authorities say the employee notified jail staff immediately.

The sheriff’s office states the inmate will likely face new charges of escape from lawful detention, a Level 5 felony, on top of the inmate’s existing warrant from another jurisdiction.

The name of the inmate who escaped the jail is not being released at this time due to an internal and criminal investigation underway.
