EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office has identified the baby shot Friday as Iowa Meriweather, of Henderson, Kentucky.
Coroner Steve Lockyear says the autopsy shows the 9-month-old girl died from a single gunshot wound to the head. He has ruled the death a homicide.
Evansville Police say the father of baby girl who was shot Friday has been arrested.
20-year-old Anthony Lamont Meriweather was booked into jail late Friday night. He’s charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
Court documents say Meriweather originally told police he was carrying the baby in a car seat outside of the 3900 block of Vista Dr. when he told police the baby was hit in a drive-by shooting.
According to a neighbor who called 9-1-1, Meriweather attempted to perform CPR until first responders could arrive.
Police say when they arrived to the apartment, officers cleared the apartment for their safety since no one knew where the suspect or firearm was.
According to court documents, police found a shell casing in the bathroom in plain sight. Documents show a witness told police Meriweather came to the apartment to visit and brought his child.
Authorities state Meriweather’s baby was in her car seat on the living room floor.
Documents state the witness told police he keeps a gun in the cushions of the couch. It states the witness went upstairs for a minute when he heard a shot fired.
According to police, the witness ran down the stairs and saw Meriweather with a blank look on his face. Because of this, the witness told police he feared for his safety so he took the gun upstairs to secure it.
Police say when the witness came back downstairs, Meriweather picked up his baby from the car seat and the witness saw blood coming from the baby’s head.
Court documents state when police interviewed Meriweather, he later admitted to finding the gun in the apartment and was handling it. Police say while he handled the gun, it went off and hit his daughter in the face.
Police tell 14 News they do not expect any other arrests in this case.
Police and emergency crews were called Friday afternoon to the 3900 block of Vista Drive after reports of a shooting.
Police say a nine-month-old girl was shot inside an apartment. The told us us shortly after 5 p.m. the baby died.
The coroner says an autopsy is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.
