Names released in Carmi, IL shooting believed to be murder/suicide

CARMI, IL. (WFIE) - Two people were found dead at a home in the 1600 block of Hillcrest Avenue on Friday morning.

According to Carmi Police Chief Jason Carter, a family member called authorities after finding the two victims with apparent gunshot wounds around 11:10 a.m.

Chief Carter says that officers are investigating this case as a double shooting involving a 71-year-old Phyllis Daniel and a 72-year-old Charles Daniel.

He told 14 News the woman was found dead in a car on the driveway, while the man was discovered inside the home.

Chief Carter says it’s been a while since his police department have had to call state troopers to help them with a case of this magnitude.

Neighbors told 14 News the couple loved helping others. and hope that the stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic were not the reasons for this tragedy.

Police say they believe this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.

Monday they said it appears Charles shot his wife, then went inside the home and took his own life.
