Child killed in Newburgh house fire

WARRICK CO., Ind. (WFIE) - A deadly fire is under investigation in Newburgh.

It happened around 9 p.m. Sunday on Plum Street, off the Ohio River Scenic Byway.

The Warrick County Coroner 23-month-old Kensley Grace Howard was killed. Preliminary autopsy results show that she died of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters say smoke and flames were coming from the second floor, and they aren’t sure how long it was burning before they got there.

We’re told it took crews about 25 minutes to get it under control.

Officials shut down several roads while working, but they are all back open.

There is no word yet on how that fire started.

“At this time, the fire investigators and police department are still working to determine the cause, there is no foul play suspected as a result of the fire, but they are still trying to determine the cause,” Major Jason Skully said.

Officials say everyone else made it out of the home and were treated on the scene.

They say a first responder was treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire is being investigated by Newburgh Police.
