Twin Bridge pier okay after barge hit
HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) - Officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet say there were “no significant findings” during the inspection of a Twin Bridge pier Thursday.
The Coast Guard says the Motor Vessel Washington was pushing 10 empty barges downstream on the Ohio River Tuesday night.
They say the tow brushed up against the middle pier.
The pilot reported it to the Coast Guard, indicating there was no damage to the barges or towboat and only a scrape on the pier.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) crews had the northbound bridge down to one lane Thursday morning for an inspection.
They say they found a spall less than half an inch deep on the end pier. No reinforced steel was exposed, and the integrity of the bridge is still intact.
Authorities tell us a barge hits one of the bridges about three to four times a year.
